Evolution 2002

a narrative sound collage that captures the progression of life and its musical essence.

The piece was composed by manipulating sounds through digital signal processing. A variety of programs, including Soundhack, Lemur, Csound, and Pro Tools were used. While some of the sound sources are easily recognizable, such as Lansky's Idle Chatter and Kraftwerk's Robots, others are highly mutated. The piece ends with a hidden homage to Max Mathews, his Numerology having been the illegible source for the future in Evolution.

Conceptually the piece is organized into four parts, one life form converging into the next, coexisting but then dying away, allowing time to continue its path.

Musically, Evolution is driven by the nature of its sound sources, building harmony and rhythm around timbre, trying to accentuate that which is already implied. The slow gestures throughout the piece give the sounds space to breathe and evolve. In a way, the sounds sung themselves giving the piece not only its tone but also its pace and movement.
