Using field recordings, found sound, and live processing, the works that Luis Maurette and Ben Bracken create spring out of personal experiences and ideas that the two have shared. The use of video mirrors the use of sound, both reflecting the performance and the space through live sampling and processing. New temporal locations are created through the melding of the present with past places and times. These improvisations maintain a level of transparency in regard to individual motives and ideas, and create a sense of patience even during its most frenetic moments. Although often improvised, there is a purpose and motivation in this music, all brought about through the implicit trust that exists between the two performers; a shared space where they both inhabit. The duo fully explores the possibilities found in today's real-time processes, continually challenging notions of place and memory, blurring temporal location and juxtaposing the present with the past. All of what is happening is created in real-time, stressing the present moment but weaving it with the distant and the past. The combination of the sonic, visual, and performative elements create a thick weaving of time and place, allowing for the coexistence of temporal locations. By concentrating on the interval between places, the duo fills space with sound, evoking memories and distant places, as well as creating awareness for the space in which they are present. |
